How Do You Plan an Around-the-World Trip When No Single Cruise Fits?

3 min read

An around-the-world trip can combine cruises, flights and hotel stays instead of following one ship’s itinerary. Start with the destinations that matter most, then choose the transportation and time on land that make those visits worthwhile. The challenge is not adding more stops; it is making the whole journey work.

South America

Roxanne Walters, a TripMatters travel advisor, is developing this kind of trip for a solo traveler hoping to spend three to four months abroad. His wish list includes South America, Australia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Korea, Africa and Northern Europe. Melbourne carries personal significance, and no single cruise or tour covers everything he wants.

Start with the places you do not want to compromise on

We would separate essential destinations from optional stops before comparing cruises. For each priority, ask how much time you actually want there. A port call and several hotel nights offer very different opportunities to explore.

That distinction matters when a destination has personal meaning. Rather than accepting a brief visit simply because it appears on a cruise itinerary, consider whether a land stay would better serve the reason you are going.

Roxanne is exploring cruises, repositioning sailings, hotels and flights to connect her client’s priorities. This remains a planning project, not a completed journey.

Use a cruise where it improves the trip

A repositioning cruise moves a ship between sailing regions, often seasonally. These one-way voyages can include several consecutive sea days, according to Celebrity Cruises’ explanation of repositioning cruises. Celebrity Cruises

That can make a sailing useful both as a vacation experience and as a way to reach another region. But the direction, departure date and time onboard must fit your plans.

We would compare the entire itinerary rather than treating the sailing as a substitute for a flight. Would you enjoy the sea days? Does the arrival port bring you closer to your next destination? Our guide to choosing the right cruise style can help you evaluate the onboard experience before committing. Trip Matters

Check the connections before booking

The most important planning work may happen between reservations. We would examine every transition, including disembarkation, luggage, airport transfers and the arrival requirements for the next cruise.

Avoid assuming that two bookings work together just because they share a city and date. Ask what happens if the first service is delayed and whether an overnight stay would create a more comfortable connection.

For several months of travel, leave room for rest as well. Repeated early departures and hotel changes can undermine the slower experience you hoped to create.

Compare the whole journey’s cost

We would price the cruises, flights, hotels, transfers and planned activities together. A cheaper sailing may offer poor overall value if it creates expensive connections or takes time away from an essential destination.

For a solo traveler, request the actual price for one person in the proposed accommodation rather than relying on the advertised starting fare. Compare flexibility and cancellation terms alongside cost.

Once arrangements are confirmed, keep each stage organized. Our guide to saving travel information offline explains how to keep hotel details, transportation information and important contacts accessible. Trip Matters
