How do you plan a trip to Europe?

Lock your travel window first, pick two or three anchor cities second, then book long-haul air 3 to 6 months out and build hotels, trains, and tours around that flight. Air availability is the real constraint, so everything else should bend to it. Build the trip in this order, not the order that feels natural

Almost everyone starts by browsing hotels. It is the fun part, and it locks you into decisions you have not earned yet. A hotel you fall for in Florence quietly commits you to a route, a season, and a budget before you know whether the flight works. Better order:

1. Travel window. Not exact dates. A two-week range you can shift by three or four days.

2. Anchor cities. Two or three maximum for 10 days. More and you spend the trip in transit.

3. Long-haul air. The constraint. Book it and the rest becomes solvable.

4. Hotels. Where a VIRTUOSO booking changes the math, covered below.

5. Intercity transport. Trains and short-haul flights between your anchors.

6. Experiences. The things that sell out, like Vatican early access or a reserved Uffizi entry.

7. Insurance. Bought near your first deposit, not the week before you fly.

When to start planning a trip to Europe for 2027

For peak summer, start 9 to 12 months out and book air 5 to 6 months out. July is the most expensive month to cross the Atlantic, with fares averaging roughly $1,500 per person round trip, and those seats do not get cheaper as they get scarcer. If a price like that is in play, book with a travel advisor at TripMatters. For shoulder season, late April through May and September through October, the window is more forgiving. Booking 3 to 6 months ahead is the sweet spot for transatlantic economy, and Google Flights data suggests the best fares appear around 94 days or more before departure.

Our opinion after watching this cycle for years: shoulder season beats summer on almost every measure. Fewer crowds, better restaurant availability, better weather in Italy and Spain than July heat, and fares hundreds of dollars lower per person.

What a trip to Europe actually costs in 2026 and 2027

Here are the numbers people search for, without the vagueness:

• Airfare. US to Europe economy round trip averaged roughly $900 to $1,200 in 2026. Peak July runs closer to $1,500.

• A 10-day mid-range trip. About $3,000 to $3,500 per person all in, covering flights, mid-tier hotels, food, and local transport.

• A 10-day luxury trip. Budget $6,000 or more per person, and considerably more if you want five-star properties in Paris or the Amalfi Coast in high season.

Flying to Europe from Orange County means flying from LAX

John Wayne Airport has no nonstop service to Europe. SNA runs roughly two dozen international flights a week and every one goes to Mexico or Canada. LAX offers around a dozen nonstop European routes, including London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Madrid, and Rome, at 10 to 12 hours in the air.

So Orange County travelers face a real trade-off: connect out of SNA through a domestic hub, or drive to LAX for a nonstop. I would drive to LAX nearly every time. A connection adds a second chance to misconnect, a second chance to lose a bag, and on the return it adds a domestic leg after an overnight flight, exactly when you are least equipped to handle a problem.

The exception is a connection that saves $400 or more per person, or one that reaches a secondary city like Nice or Porto without a self-transfer. That is a judgment call we make daily for travelers across Tustin, Irvine, and Newport Beach.

Europe's border rules changed in 2026, and ETIAS is not what most people think

Two separate systems get confused constantly. Here is the difference.

EES, the Entry/Exit System, is live now. It became fully operational on April 10, 2026, replacing passport stamping. On your first Schengen entry you register fingerprints, a facial image, and passport data at the border. It has been painful at busy airports, with processing times up around 70 percent at some crossings during peak periods.

The practical consequence: if you connect through a Schengen hub like Frankfurt, Amsterdam, or Paris, give yourself at least 90 minutes, more in July and August. A 60-minute connection that worked in 2024 is a real risk now.

ETIAS is not in effect as of August 2026. It has been delayed again, with a revised timeline expected after eu-LISA's September 2026 board meeting. At launch it will cost 20 euros, last three years or until your passport expires, and carry a six-month transitional period plus a six-month grace period before strict enforcement. Travelers under 18 and over 70 are exempt from the fee.

For now, Americans need a valid passport and nothing filed in advance. Ignore any site charging you to "apply for ETIAS" today. There is nothing to apply for yet.
