Is Switzerland Worth Visiting If You Don’t Ski?

Switzerland can make a rewarding vacation without a single day on the ski slopes.

Lake St. Moritz and surrounding mountains in Switzerland

Scenic train journeys, mountain viewpoints, spa stays, regional food and local traditions offer a different way to experience the Alps, particularly in summer and autumn. Switzerland Tourism highlights those experiences across Graubünden, where destinations such as St. Moritz and Davos offer considerably more than winter sports. Switzerland Tourism

For Pamela Thornburgh, a TripMatters travel advisor, a September 2026 trip brought that variety together. Traveling with Virtuoso, she stayed at three properties, explored the landscapes by train, enjoyed spa experiences and brewery tours, rode funiculars to viewpoints and took a day trip to Liechtenstein. One of her most memorable experiences was watching cattle return from their mountain pastures, a seasonal tradition known as the Alpabzug.

Her description of the scenery was simple: “The postcard is real.” The more useful lesson for someone planning a trip is that enjoying those landscapes does not require building every day around an athletic activity.

Where did Pamela travel in Switzerland?

Pamela’s stays included Kulm Hotel St. Moritz, AlpenGold Hotel in Davos and Grand Resort Bad Ragaz. The combination gave her small group several different hotel experiences while exploring this part of Switzerland.

For itinerary planning, it helps to distinguish the locations. St. Moritz and Davos are in Graubünden, in eastern Switzerland. Bad Ragaz is outside that canton, in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley. These are separate destinations to connect thoughtfully, not neighboring hotels you would move between without considering the travel involved. Switzerland Tourism

We would begin by deciding what each stop adds to the trip. A hotel chosen for mountain excursions serves a different purpose from a resort where you want substantial time to relax. Visiting several properties can create variety, but only if you leave enough time to enjoy each one.

Can the train journey be part of the experience?

For Pamela, taking in the scenery by train was part of the trip rather than simply a way to reach the next hotel.

Travelers planning a similar region have several rail options to investigate. Switzerland Tourism describes the Rhaetian Railway as a network connecting destinations including Chur, Davos, St. Moritz and the Engadin. Its Albula and Bernina lines form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and parts of the network are used by the Glacier Express and Bernina Express. Switzerland Tourism

A useful detail is that a famous landscape does not always require booking the best-known panoramic service. Switzerland Tourism notes that the Landwasser Viaduct can be crossed using a regular train ticket, while the panoramic trains require seat reservations. The appropriate choice depends on your route and the experience you want. Switzerland Tourism

Before adding a rail journey, check how it fits between your overnight stops. A scenic train can be a highlight, but adding unnecessary backtracking just to ride a famous service may make the overall trip less enjoyable.

Our guide to planning a multi-city European trip provides a broader starting point for thinking about destinations and transportation together. For Switzerland, we would give the journey between stops particular attention.

How did the hotels contribute to the trip?

Pamela’s three hotel stays were part of what made the journey memorable. She described the accommodations and views as distinct experiences rather than treating the properties as interchangeable places to sleep.

The hotels’ published facilities help explain the different kinds of stays a traveler could build around them.

Kulm Hotel St. Moritz presents a summer experience that includes its spa, terrace dining, golf, tennis and access to the surrounding Engadin landscape. For travelers who want both outdoor time and a substantial hotel experience, those are useful features to compare. The property’s seasonal offers and any included transportation benefits should be checked against the dates and rate you are booking. Kulm Hotel St. Moritz

AlpenGold Hotel Davos lists heated indoor and outdoor pools, sauna facilities, treatment rooms, a fitness studio and a yoga room within its spa. We would consider how much time you actually want to spend using those facilities before paying for a hotel primarily on the strength of its wellness offering. A spa is more valuable when your itinerary leaves room to enjoy it. AlpenGold Hotel

Grand Resort Bad Ragaz places thermal bathing at the center of its offering. Bad Ragaz itself is known for thermal water from the Tamina spring, giving this stop a different focus from a trip organized entirely around mountain excursions. Grand Resort Bad Ragaz

These are not reasons every traveler should book the same three properties. They are examples of how hotel selection can shape the vacation. Choose the facilities you expect to use, then allow enough unscheduled time for them to become part of the experience.

What can you do besides skiing or spending every day hiking?

Pamela’s trip included a luge ride, funicular journeys, brewery tours, spa time and meals featuring fondue. The variety allowed the group to experience the region through food, scenery, activities and relaxation rather than one repeated type of excursion.

That mix is a useful starting point for travelers with different interests. One person may want an active morning, while another would rather have a slower day with a scenic outing and a long lunch. We would choose a base and daily plans that give both people something to enjoy, rather than assuming a mountain vacation needs to mean strenuous activity throughout.

The distinction also matters when discussing mobility. Not skiing is not the same as needing step-free access, and riding a mountain railway does not answer every question about the rest of an excursion. Ask operators about the walk to the station, boarding arrangements, steps at the viewpoint and the terrain beyond it.

The goal is to understand the complete outing before deciding whether it suits everyone traveling.

What is the Alpabzug, and can you plan a trip around it?

The Alpabzug marks the return of livestock from high mountain pastures at the end of the Alpine summer. Graubünden’s tourism organization describes decorated animals being brought into the valleys, with local celebrations accompanying the return in various communities. Graubünden Ferien

Pamela witnessed the tradition during her trip and considered it one of the most special experiences of the journey. It gave her a glimpse of local life alongside the hotels and scenery.

There is not one national date when every village holds its procession. Graubünden’s published guide to cattle descents and autumn festivals lists separate events in different communities, with dates spread across the season. Graubünden Ferien

We would confirm the event you want to see before finalizing the surrounding hotel stays. Do not book a general autumn trip and assume a procession will happen nearby while you are there. For a future year, check that the local organizer has actually announced the date rather than carrying forward the previous year’s schedule.

Is September a good time for this kind of Switzerland trip?

Pamela’s September experience illustrates what an early-autumn itinerary can include, but the right dates depend on the particular activities you want.

Switzerland Tourism highlights autumn rail journeys through mountain landscapes, lakes and changing forests. That makes the season worth considering for travelers more interested in scenery than skiing. Switzerland Tourism

However, operating schedules deserve close attention. The Engadin’s official mountain-railway guidance publishes separate schedules for different services. Its summer 2026 information, for example, lists the St. Moritz Dorf–Chantarella–Corviglia funicular as closed for extensive maintenance, with alternative access arrangements described separately. Engadin

That is a useful reminder that “the mountains are open” is not a sufficient planning assumption. Check the specific railway, lift, attraction and hotel for your dates, including the return service you will need after an excursion.

We would also leave some flexibility around weather-dependent outings rather than making one viewpoint the only reason to stay in a destination.

Should you add a day trip to Liechtenstein?

Pamela’s itinerary included a day trip to Liechtenstein, but that does not mean every eastern Switzerland trip needs the same addition.

We would start by asking what you want from the excursion and what you would otherwise do with that day. An additional destination can bring welcome variety, but it can also take time away from a hotel, town or landscape you specifically chose to enjoy.

This is particularly important on a shorter trip. Compare the complete travel day, including transfers and time on the ground, rather than adding another country simply because it appears nearby on a map.

The strongest itinerary is not necessarily the one with the most place names. It is the one where the time spent moving makes sense for what you gain.

How should you plan Switzerland without overpacking the itinerary?

Begin with the experiences that would make the trip worthwhile for you. Those might be a scenic rail journey, a particular mountain viewpoint, time in thermal baths or a seasonal cultural event. Then choose overnight stops that support those priorities.

We would resist treating Pamela’s three hotel stays as a minimum requirement.

Depending on your available time, fewer bases may let you experience more of each place. Before adding another stop, consider the packing, station transfers, check-in and recovery time involved.

Keep the practical information organized as well. On a trip with several hotels and transportation arrangements, save the addresses, confirmations and important contacts somewhere you can access without a connection. Our guide to what to save offline before international travel explains how to prepare that information before departure.

Pamela’s trip offers a useful example of the variety available. You can combine outdoor experiences with comfortable hotels and cultural encounters without building the entire vacation around one sport.
